If you want to build in your backyard, following the rules often comes up with the concept of backyard area. We explain here simply what backyard area is and how you can easily determine it at your house.

Determining the backyard area for a terraced house
If you have a terraced house (neighbors attached to your house on both sides), determining the backyard area is very simple. This area extends from 1 meter behind the front facade to the rear over the entire plot.

Determining the backyard area at a corner house or semi-detached house
The same rule applies as above, namely: the backyard area starts 1 meter behind the front facade and runs backwards over the entire plot. There is 1 difference and that is if the house borders on a publicly accessible area. Think of the public road, a bicycle path or a park. In that case, you need to draw a straight line from the side wall of the house. That line should run straight with the side wall of the house. It is therefore possible that a strip of your garden may not count as backyard area. That looks like this:

Draw an imaginary line up to 1m behind the line that crosses the main building 1m behind the front and from there parallel to the adjacent publicly accessible area, without crossing the main building again or entering the yard behind the main building.

That’s it.

Hint :
Here we explain how you can calculate the built-up area in order to determine the maximum amount you can build on.
