Originally, this is where The Hague originated. Around the Binnenhof is the oldest building, within the ring of canals. It was decided by Prince Maurice that The Hague should have a ring of canals to defend the city. Some of these canals remain, but even a street name like Gedempte Gracht is a reminder of those days. With +/- 100,000 inhabitants, the Centrum district consists of the following districts.

- Schildersbuurt
- Fruit and vegetable market
- Transvaal Quarter
- Zeeheldenkwartier
- Archipel neighborhood
- Willemspark
The downtown district consists of both stately and working-class neighborhoods. It just depends on which side of the center you are on. This makes the downtown district very diverse in terms of not only the type of buildings but also the prices of the homes. Similarly, the composition of the population is very diverse.
