City of Laak

City of Laak

Nineteenth-century neighborhood built to a design by noted architect Berlage.

In this polder area now called Laak and named after the Veenreviertje de Laak located there, the Amsterdam-The Hague-Rotterdam railroad line was built, with a station at the site of today’s Hollands Spoor station. Around 1900, the Laak Canal was dug, where industry settled. Most of that industrial district has now been converted into Campus of The Hague University of Applied Sciences and residential area with (student) flats.

The housing associations and the municipality realized public housing construction in the Laakkwartier residential area to the design of Berlage, especially in the period 1915-1935. In part, this construction has been replaced by modern construction of single-family homes and condominiums in low-rise and high-rise buildings.

Laakkwartier consists of the neighborhoods Laakkwartier, Spoorwijk and Binckhorst with a total population of +/- 38,000 inhabitants
